Note for the Reader:
This document was an attempt to bring back the habit to document every part of my process intensely which allows me to immerse and reflect fully. This is an archive for everything (sketches, notes, miro boards and minds maps, rants and reflections), which also means you will be able to experience the project with me.
Synopsis and limitations of the project:
After gaining an in depth understanding of the pain points of the user while using the DTC bus to travel from one location to another, the most common insights were that there was constant lack of feedback from the system and most users were very anxious with the bus systems. So it seemed like a system for the users who either have been living in Delhi for some while now or use the bus system daily. We derived three final clusters which were:
From that, we defined out problem statement:
Redefined Problem Statement: How might we keep a first timer user of DTC informed during the journey in the bus, from getting on the bus to reaching their destination?
The solution that we proposed in this scope was phased into two stages. First is a well defined signage system and a screen which displays the time of the bus arriving at the bus stop. Second, was a promotional campaign for the bus app, so that people know where they can find accurate routes to reach their destination.
After the project was completed, I gained some key insights of the bus system. The number of buses is not regulated according to the density in an area. I a big city like Delhi, number of buses should be according to smaller cluster areas. I once went to central Delhi around Khan Market and was surprised by what I saw. While most of the bus stop we saw were of South Delhi and West Delhi, they were small poorly maintained bus stops or we saw most places having no signage at all. So our basis of the insight depended on that. But in central Delhi, our exact solution was put to execution and had also failed because of poor maintenance. Which had me thinking, how complex these systems are and changing a system doesn’t happen magically overnight. A solution might not be fully and efficiently applied to all corners of a big complex city like Delhi.

I wasn’t there in the first half so my teammates caught me up with whatever was happening in the class.
It was quite strange to see how in a class of 40 students only one took the bus, which made us curious about the why behind it. As a girl living in Delhi, we were aware of the pre conceived notion for a bus travel experience because of all the cases which made it skeptical and a mode to avoid. But there must be other reasons and there are still so many people who travel in the bus. So who are these people? And what problems do they face in this system? How many women travel in buses? All the questions we were to answer with the project.
